This article provides a basis for using BIM models for the design and analysis of sustainable buildings. The other option is to apply advanced processes using Dynamo and Revit API to determine the sun direction and the shaded areas of the whole building or particular objects such as walls, roof, or windows in Revit models. One option to get this information is to use the Solar Analysis tool, included with the Insight plug-in in Revit software. In some cases, you want to determine shaded exterior walls, windows, or plants. You can find more information about Heating and Cooling Loads analysis here. When planning building areas, you may want to identify what a building's shadow looks like. The heating and cooling loads in the baseline model are calculated using EnergyPlus hourly simulation engine for design days. This Insight Heating and Cooling tool performs an analysis of your design using EnergyPlus to determine the heating and cooling loads. You can perform different types of studies including LEED Daylighting and Illuminance. The Insight Lighting tool allows you to perform lighting analysis studies for your building. While Insight Solar is not intended to be used for sizing PV panels, it can help you identify locations for maximum solar gain by considering the effect of shading and seasonal variation in solar radiation. The results of these selected analysis are displayed in the Solar Analysis window, as well as being displayed visually as color gradients on the model surfaces. The Insight Solar tool can perform many types of solar analyses on your model. You can find more information about how to use Insight’s Energy Optimization tools here.
